Sat and watched Jaws (again) last night. A spontaneuos viewing triggered by the simple fact it was starting when I happened to be channel hopping. Of all the lines in the script that make me laugh this one has gone largely unnoticed…but last night it was declared my new favourite Jaws moment.

I’m pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have, in fact, caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers.

Leonardo DiCaprio is to star in “Blink” a film directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana). I mention this because last year I read the book “Blink” on which it’s based, written by contemporary philosopher and socioligist Malcolm Gladwell. How they’ll turn a book about human nature (specifically a study of ‘Rapid cognition’) into a film is anyones guess. For anyone who’s interested read Gladwell’s”The Tipping Point” before “Blink”…it’ll help you decide if he talks good sense or just churns out psuedo-sociological toss for the MTV generation. (Clue: It’s the former)

Despite my general derision of the Mark Kermode in the past (due to his slot on Radio 1 in the 90’s) I’ve gradually been revising my opinion over the years (due to BBC2’s ‘The Culture Show’).

The conversion is now complete after reading his new book “It’s only a Movie”. Not the most intellectual book you’ll ever read and a bit self-indulgent at times but still, highly recommended.

I’ve mentioned before that Sim is a fan of (amongst other things) a damn good horror film. Just to clarify, as much as he loves the ‘Saw’ series, his main appreciation lies with Asian horror, the work of Takasi Miike and more recently anything coming out of France.
so, I read an article on Lars Von Trier’s new film “Antichrist” and upon hearing Sim’s weekly re-telling of his latest viewing, advised him, “Here’s one you may have heard of - DONT watch it”.

I haven’t seen it and dont plan to. Sim, of course, watched it. The text message I received some hours later went along the lines of “Just watched Antichrist - I’m gonna’ be fucking scarred and I still feel physically sick. It’s not designed to be gory, it’s trippy, wierd and hardcore phsycological. And what I saw HAS to be an uncut version they’ll NEVER release”.

Alas, no. It got glowing reviews at the Cannes film festival (despite audience members allegedly fainting and/or walking out) and had a general, uncut yet restricted, release. I invited little bro’ to write a review for the site and was met with. “No, that’d mean having to think about it again”.

For all you horror “bulls” out there, consider this post your “red rag”…..I dare you.

“Choose a classic..” - Postscript

Following my, frankly, gushing post about the writing talents of Irvine Welsh I feel the need to post this current bit of news. Thanks to Ade for this - and by the way - I WILL now post our final cast list of actors best suited to star in a film version of the greatest novel ever written, ‘Glue’.

Robert Carlyle has told the BBC that director Danny Boyle is ‘edging closer’ to making Porno, the follow-up to his 1996 hit film Trainspotting.

Carlyle, who played Begbie in the film, said he would “jump through hoops of fire backwards” for the film-maker and would “do Porno tomorrow for nothing.”

The novel, by Irvine Welsh, picks up on the same characters 10 years later.

But Ewan McGregor, who played anti-hero Renton, has said in interviews that a sequel would be a “terrible shame”.

McGregor is currently starring opposite George Clooney in The Men Who Stare At Goats, which will be screened at this year’s London Film Festival.

Boyle won best director and best picture at this year’s Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire.

He and McGregor have not worked together since 1997’s A Life Less Ordinary, when the pair famously fell out over Boyle’s big screen adaptation of Alex Garland’s novel, The Beach.

“More mileage”

But Carlyle, who also starred in The Beach, said “For me personally, I would jump through hoops of fire backwards for Danny Boyle. I would do Porno tomorrow for nothing.”

He added his character from Trainspotting, the psychotic Francis Begbie, was “probably the only character I would ever want to revisit because I do believe that there’s an awful lot more mileage there in Begbie.”

So far McGregor has shown little enthusiasm for a Trainspotting sequel
He said: “I think there is lots more entertainment to be had from that group of people so I would be up for it, and I know Danny seems to be edging more towards it.

“After his success at the Oscars, he should be able to pretty much do as he wants.”

Boyle himself has suggested recently that a Porno script is in development.

Love him or hate him, there’s no denying his odball status (and not just the characters he’s played)….

A New York resident was relaxing one afternoon on a bench in Central Park. He felt someone cover his eyes from behind and say “Guess Who?”. On pulling away and turning round the man found himself face to face with none other than Bill Murray.

“No-one will ever believe you” the actor whispered before causally strolling away.

‘The Men Who Stare At Goats’

About a year ago, over a rather nice dinner, Toby gave me this book to read. I finished it in 48hrs (IE: It was good, not short)

That author Jon Ronson takes his research very seriously is surely reflected in George Clooney, Kevin Spacey and Ewan MacGregor all taking a part in the film version.

I want to bieleve (but I bet they take the p**s)
